Yahoo! Mail – Please respect end user settings

I don’t want to add any fuel to the flame, I just want to report an annoying problem that I hope will get addressed soon. After all, according to Sue Decker’s memo, Yahoo is going to focus more on the customers, rather than on the advertising products.

Here is my problem – as a premium Yahoo AT&T user I want my Yahoo Mail to be ad-free. Well, for some reason Yahoo insists on showing me ads. . No matter how hard I try to hide the advertising panel on the right it keeps coming back the second I move between tabs within the application (read message, compose, back to inbox etc).

Take a look – just follow the cursor:

Wow! That is annoying, but look how much attention the ads are getting. I was only watching the video, but my attention was drawn to that ad every time you tried to make it disappear. j/k.

They definitely need to respect customer preferences, but I wonder how long their applications will last when everyone hides the revenue stream. There should be a trade-off between what the customer wants and what the business needs. In this case, it might be as simple as less obtrusive ads. They should take into consideration what task their customer is trying to complete and serve ads accordingly. Allowing rich media or animated ads when people are trying to read/write email is ridiculous from a customer-centric point of view.
