How To Listen To Israeli Radio Stations On Your iPhone

israel-broadcasting-authority

Update (1/26/2010):
There is a new iPhone app that eliminates the need to configure FStream. Read about it here.

Original post starts here:

This tip is mainly for Israelis and other Hebrew speakers who live abroad or just travel and want to listen to Israeli radio stations on their iPhone while on the go. Getting this done is pretty simple:

1. Install the free FStream application on your iPhone via the AppStore

2. Open FStream and set up your favorite stations. You can do it on the iPhone or you could use a web interface which makes the input process quicker (see instructions under the More -> Web Management tab inside FStream)

3. Last thing, make sure to turn on the “Cellular Network” option otherwise the application will only work when you are iPhone is connected to a wifi hotspot.

I have collected urls for some of the popular Israeli stations streams:

Update (3/1/2009, thanks to Tal Barnea):

  • Galgaltz – http://glz.msn.co.il/media/gglz.asx
  • Galatz – http://glz.msn.co.il/media/glz.asx

I have found many other urls on different websites but those were broken. The streams above were tested and as of today (1/30/2009) (3/1/2009) are working.

If you know of other stations’ streams, feel free to add in the comments section.

Update (11/28/2009): I posted an updated list & more stations here.

    Shalom yoyav,
Great tip on the app. Thanks.
I installed it and everything seems fine, but the only station that seems to work is the classical that comes preset. i have tried all the ones you listed above, and none worked. it says connecting then stops. Any tips
I would love to be able to hear israeli radio in the car through the iphone.
    Toda.

Make sure to turn on the “cellular network” option under
    “More…”-”Settings”.

I also recommend setting the buffer size to Large. It might take a
little longer to connect but should reduce drops.

Last thing, any time you click on the Play button the app starts
playing the default classical music station. You need to click on
other stations and make sure the note sign moves next to it to
indicate it is the active one. Then follow the labels – Connecting,
    Buffering and finally Playing.

    Enjoy,
    -jay

Would like to have more explaination on steps to add diffrent radio addresses ( only the HTTP address could work for my Iphone)
Tell Miki to try it! I set it up to MP3
But I 'm very happy with Radio Tel Aviv. Wonderfull feeling to listen live news from israel.
    Thank you so much.

  4. jaymeydad says:

I used the Web Management option (again, under More…Settings) as it is much easier to input stations via the browser.

All the Israeli stations I posted above worked.

  5. tal says:

Hey, another user of the great Fsteam application. Just as a quick note, at least two of the stations listed, Galatz and GalGalatz have apparently recently stopped working. If I find the new links I will post them here.

  6. jaymeydad says:

Jay….Having just won a brand new iPod Touch, I have been looking for ways to stream Israeli stations here in California. Your site came up time and again in my searches for this info. I installed FStream, and appreciate the mms links you posted as unfortunately I cannot find any Israeli stations in their ShoutCast, SourceMac, or iTunes Preset stations they make available.
    Thanks
