Boost your Dropbox account with extra 4.5 GB free storage

Dropbox, the must have service for backup in the cloud, has a time limited offer for anyone becoming a tester of their latest beta version – up to 4.5GB of additional free space.

This is what you should do:
1. If you don’t have a Dropbox account yet, you will first need to signup for a free account

2. After you’ve signed up and installed the latest Dropbox client on your PC or Mac, you will need to download and install beta 1.3.13. You can find the links to the different versions (Windows, Mac, Linux) in this post.

BTW, for those who typically don’t install betas – I’ve been using the beta for a few days without any issues.

And now the free stuff – During the beta period, Dropbox is offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. Meaning, as soon as you plug your iPhone or digital camera, Dropbox upload wizard will pop and offer you to backup the photos & videos to Dropbox. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you’ll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 5GB total. Just start uploading the first batch of photos and check the size of your dropbox.

This is a sweet deal. Don’t miss it.

Ehud Banai & Berry Sakharof Live at the Tamar Festival

Last night I took a day trip to the dead sea to see two of my favorite Israeli musicians performing on the same stage at the beautiful venue of Wadi Zohar, a natural amphitheater located in a creek right next to the dead sea. I’ve seen both musician perform many times in the past 15-20 years and last night was one of the top concerts of both.

Here are a few videos I was able to capture throughout this amazing night, including the epic ”Foreign Country”, that last song in Berry’s song, dedicated to Gilad Shalit who was released today from captivity after more than 5 years.

Use Onavo for iPhone to reduce your data plan cost

If your iPhone data plan is a Non-Unlimited one, then one of the very first apps you should install on your iPhone is Onavo.

It is a free utility that uses data compression technology to reduce the amount of data your iPhone sends and receives when it is not on wifi. When Onavo’s saving is on, most of the apps running on your iPhone send their data compressed via Onavo’s gateway and your data usage gets significantly reduced so the chances you will exceed your plan are slim.

The app has a nice reporting module that shows total savings and breakdown by service/app. As you can see in the screenshot below, in my case – during the first week of Oct I saved 56% of all the data that was sent. This is huge.

One feature I would like to see added to the app is the ability to exclude certain apps from sending their data via Onavo’s gateway. The reason is that certain streaming apps like online radio often get stuck in a connecting mode and never play the stream when Onavo is on, and only way to make them work is disable Onavo completely.

Other than that, Onavo is a great – a must have utility for your iPhone. You can get it from http://www.onavo.com

How to fix Missing Personal Hotspot after iOS 5 GM upgrade

This tip is to all of you iOS 5 developers – There is a really annoying bug in iOS 5 GM that makes the Personal Hotspot option disappear after the upgrade.

Well, fixing it is easy – all you have to do is Reset Network Settings (under General…Reset…) and the good old Personal Hotspot option will appear again.

1. Preview now lets you add a signature to any PDF

This is a HUGE feature. A truly disruptive one that is going to make you stop the bad habit of printing a document, signing it, scanning it to a PDF and then emailing it.

2. Resize any window from anywhere

Yes, yes, just like in Windows. No more being limited by either going full size (clicking on the green + button at the upper left corner) or using the resizing control at the bottom right corner of a window. Every edge got a resizing control.

3. Mission Control

I was never a big fan of Spaces in OS X Leopard. The process of moving windows between spaces was not easy. Mission Control is changing things dramatically. It is super easy to view all desktops (3 fingers gestures up), navigate between desktops (3 fingers left-right gesture) and move app windows between desktops. My desktop is no longer a mess.

So I say, don’t hesitate. Upgrade to OS X Lion. And if you can afford spending a little bit more, buy the super sleek MacBook Air which comes pre-installed with it.

Ehud Banai – Live 2011

Ehud Banai, one of my favorite Israeli artists, has recently released a new fantastic album called “Drops of the Night”and went on a tour. As a matter of fact, he is not just an artist, but one that I have been following, and influenced, by for 25 years.

His debut album “Ehud Banai and the Refugees” was the first vinyl record that I had purchased and the track “Your Time Is Over” was one of the first songs and one of my favorite ones he has released.

Today is my birthday. I am 40 and super happy and thankful.

Thankful for being again in Israel around family and friends.
Thankful for the wonderful startup experience of Hitpad and being lucky to share this thrilling ride with my good old friend Nir.

And most important, thankful for having an amazing supportive wife and three wonderful boys that are the light of my life.
